Skąpski on Machines
2010/05/14

In 1982, in the village of Zasań near Myślenice, I witnessed an attempt to start up a machine for ploughing up potatoes. The machine was homemade by a farmer from an SHL motorcycle. It looked ridiculous: handlebars at the back from the motorbike; no back wheel, in place of which was a ploughshare; the motor had been moved to the front, on a metal paddle wheel apparently taken from some kind of agricultural machinery. I stared in disbelief at the farmer’s struggle. I couldn’t begin to imagine that this construction would work. Since in rural Poland I had already seen a variety of handmade machines, I thought to myself that it would be worth documenting.

We've Survived the British Invasion!
2010/05/10

With the weekend's openings behind us, we've survived a real British invasion: the few dozen special guests we invited were unable to hide their astonishment at how popular photography is in Krakow. We had to stuff people into some of the galleries, there was no sitting room in the meetings with the artists, and the curator tours drew people aged five to one hundred. Even the weather turned out - after another rainy day, the sun beamed on the Starmach Gallery opening.
